Fees & Financial Support

Fees are paid from the source that provides the student's stipend, and the graduate student is not obligated to pay them. California residents do not pay out-of-state (non-resident) tuition, but out-of-state US citizens are charged tuition for the first year and must begin to establish California residency immediately after their arrival in California. In general, the tuition charge is paid by the graduate group for domestic, out-of-state students during their first year. Foreign students are obligated to pay out-of-state tuition for the duration of their studies.

Legal residence in California requires, among other things, that the individual remain in continuous residence in the state for at least one year prior to his/her application for legal residency. Information about residency requirements is available at http://registrar.ucdavis.edu/faq/slr/. Additional questions regarding residency requirements should be directed to the Residence Deputy, Office of the Registrar, UC Davis, One Shields Ave., Davis, CA 95616, (530) 752-0879. The Residence Deputy is the only person on the campus authorized to supply information regarding residency for tuition purposes.

Fellowships administered by the university are available on a competitive basis to qualified applicants for graduate study. Application for these university fellowships should be made using the Graduate Studies form included in the Graduate Studies application for admission. The deadline for applications is December 15.

In addition to the university fellowships, a number of research and teaching assistantships are available in some of the departments that participate in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Graduate Group. Research assistantships are available from individual faculty members. Other sources of support include the NIH Training Grant in Molecular and Cell Biology, the NIH Training Grant in Biotechnology and the NSF Plant Cell Biology Training Grant. It is the group's policy to support all domestic Ph.D. students in the program. Specific information about financial support will be provided to admitted applicants.

Federal Student Aid

All graduate applicants who are US citizens, permanent residents or immigrants are required to file a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA) as early as possible (available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov), but no later than March 1. This form is used to determine financial need only, a component of the eligibility criteria for fellowships, and for all forms of financial aid.
